Neurotoxin Storage Requirements

By Stcki · 6 min read · March 2026

Most neurotoxins must be refrigerated at 2–8°C (36–46°F) before and after reconstitution. Two exceptions: Daxxify can be stored at room temperature before reconstitution, and Xeomin can remain at room temperature for up to 36 months unopened. All reconstituted neurotoxins must be used within 24 hours — no exceptions.

Why storage matters for your bottom line

Neurotoxins are among the most expensive products in an aesthetic practice — typically $5–7 per unit at cost, $10–18 per unit at retail. A single 100-unit vial of Botox represents $500–700 in cost and $1,000–1,800 in potential revenue. Improper storage destroys inventory value.

Temperature excursions — even brief periods outside the recommended range — can reduce product potency.

Expiration mismanagement is the other major storage-related cost. Practices that order too much or don't rotate stock regularly write off hundreds to thousands of dollars in expired product.

The 24-hour rule: no exceptions

Once any neurotoxin is reconstituted, the clock starts. All six FDA-approved neurotoxins must be used within 24 hours of reconstitution. After that window, unused product must be discarded.

Every reconstituted vial should be labeled with: product name, date and time of reconstitution, expiration (24 hours from reconstitution time), and injector's initials.

Cold chain: receiving and storing shipments

  1. Inspect on arrival. Check that cold packs are still cold and packaging is intact.
  2. Refrigerate immediately. For all products except Daxxify, get them into the refrigerator within minutes.
  3. Verify lot numbers and expiration dates. Log into your inventory system at time of receipt.
  4. Rotate stock. First-in, first-out (FIFO).
  5. Separate products. Keep all six products clearly separated in storage.
  6. Monitor refrigerator temperature. A thermometer inside your storage fridge — checked daily — catches temperature drift.

Room temperature storage: Daxxify and Xeomin

Daxxify

Uses a novel peptide stabilizer (instead of human albumin), which allows unopened vials to be stored at room temperature. After reconstitution, follows the same 24-hour rule.

Xeomin

The "naked" formulation gives it exceptional stability. Unopened vials can be stored at room temperature for up to 36 months — the longest shelf life flexibility of any neurotoxin.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should Botox be stored?

Refrigerate unopened Botox at 2–8°C. Do not freeze. After reconstitution, refrigerate and use within 24 hours.

Does Daxxify need to be refrigerated?

Unopened Daxxify can be stored at room temperature. After reconstitution, use within 24 hours.

Can Xeomin be stored at room temperature?

Yes — unopened Xeomin can be stored at room temperature for up to 36 months.

How long does reconstituted neurotoxin last?

All reconstituted neurotoxins must be used within 24 hours. No exceptions.

What happens if neurotoxin is left out of the refrigerator?

Temperature excursions can reduce potency. When in doubt, discard.

How do you prevent neurotoxin from expiring?

Set expiration alerts at 90, 60, and 30 days. Review weekly. Transfer slow-moving product. Order smaller quantities more frequently.
